Question:

Indian Food At High Schools?

I was planning to approach my local high school and ask if i could take over one of there hospitality and catering classes to show the class how to cook indian food and let them eat it. My initial plan was to go to the class with a 3 course meal for the children however these portions won't be the portions i give to customers at my restaurants these portions would be rather smaller. When i cook the starter i would like them all to gather around and watch however the point the starter is being grilled and cooked i would like them to sit down and write a review on what they have seen and what they liked best and the same procedure when i cook the main meal and the dessert. I would like responses from teachers and general people on how you think i should approach this and would it be a good idea and how i could make it a better prospect. i would much appreciate your help. thank you.

  1. I think it is a great idea. Kids are a lot mre adventurous than we give them credit for. I think they would enjoy a change of teachers too. Go for it. If you have a restaurant, maybe consider a cooking class once a month. Very hands on

  2. as a parent - good Indian food would be a great asset to kids used to eating greasy bland takeway, I guess you would like to show them how to prepare and use spices which is like a foreign language to most American kids.

also teachers may appreciate the idea that you have to go through a complex process to achieve your aims.

if your local school doesn't accept the idea keep trying further afield. Good luck!

  3. I like Indian food yes!!

  4. This sounds like a great idea!  As long as it fits within the scheduled time, is served and cleaned-up by you (and not left to the teacher,)  it would be wonderful. I am an art docent, and offer 5 art classes to children at the public schools each year.  The teachers appreciate it when they get to enjoy learning how you do it, and are able to fully watch their students - so your taking over all of the tasks allows them to do that.  Teachers also appreciate my sending them a written lesson plan one week in advance.  I also provide paperwork for the children to take home - in your case, a list of ingredients, and descriptions of the food (flavors, traditions behind some of them, etc.,) would be a wonderful take-home item.  For the art classes, I arrange for two assistants to help me - who meet with me in advance, and learn about what I will do.  We go into the classroom and do the set-up, presentation, and clean up.  The best place to start is either with the principal, or in my case - the PTA (who sometimes support school-enrichment projects.) Have a healthy and happy leap year!
