Indian Hockey: Rajpal Singh quits captaincy
Emotionally hurt by the treatment of chief coach, Jose Brasa, the captain of the Indian hockey team, Rajpal Singh, has decided to quit the post. The captain blamed the chief coach for humiliating him throughout the Asian Games event. He was of the view that Brasa started misbehaving with him during the world cup matches earlier this year. However, he did not complain for the sake of team, but now it was not possible for him to remain silent.
Coughing up the venom he had kept inside for a long time, Rajpal, who led the Indian team to bronze medal at Guangzhou, stated before media representatives,
“I had made up my mind, to quit 3-4 months back, but decided not to go ahead as Commonwealth games and the Asian Games were up ahead. But now I feel time has come to speak up, as it is difficult to continue, as a powerless captain who even does not know what his duties are.”
It was during the start of the year, when the world cup hockey was approaching and Indian hockey was marred by the captaincy problem. In a frantic manner, Brasa vouched for Prabhjot Singh, a senior player from the team. However, the authority’s decision landed in favor of Rajpal. Rajpal lamented,
“Brasa wanted to make, one of his favorite player, captain. But when that did not happen he started humiliating me during the World Cup and then the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. I was like the 16th player of the team despite being the captain"
He further alleged that the poor performance of the team, at World Cup as well as the Guangzhou Asian Games, was because of the mental torture he had been subjected to and that was caused by the chief coach of the team. The team captain also went on saying that despite of the treatment, he had been subjected to, he tried his best to depict hundred percent on the field With so much bad blood in the team, it is easy to believe that the Indian side were under immense psychological pressure. Their performance suffered and they returned home in a humiliating manner.
