Indian Open: Carlota Ciganda rises to 8th position in second round
Carlota Ciganda of Spain gave a tough time to rivals in the second round of Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012 as she shot an impressive 68 on Saturday.
Ciganda may not have got off to a good start that saw her card a 75 in the first round on Friday, she atoned for the loss in the second round and now looks more confident than she was at the start of the Ladies European Tour (LET) tournament.
She is currently standing at the 8th position along with four other contenders.
Regarded as one of the strongest players at the three-day event, being held at the DLF Golf & Country Club, Ciganda did much better than most of the top-ranked contenders.
The Spanish golfer started the round on Saturday, with plenty of confidence as she parred the 10th hole and launched a birdie on the next. She then parred the next four holes and carded a bogey on the difficult par-3 16th.
However, the Spanish golfer shot her second birdie on the 18th hole to improve position on the leaderboard.
On the front nine, Ciganda came up with a more solid strategy, but had to suffer a bogey on the first hole. She, however, reeled off a birdie on the par-4 second. The LET giant impressed the Indian spectators after she sank two consecutive birdies on the 8th and 9th hole.
Commentators said that Ciganda has snapped out of a tough phase now, which means that she will be expected to perform a bit more aggressively in the final two rounds.
Commentators went on to say that if the second-round star performers such as Thai Pornanong Phatlum and Aussie Bree Arthur do not maintain their momentum early in the final round on Sunday, they could be in serious trouble.
Indian Aditi Ashok, who grabbed a first-round lead along with two other players, faltered in the second round as she posted a 74 to slip to the 8th from 1st position.
Ashok displayed a solid game in the opening round as she carded a 69. She expressed her confidence while speaking to the media at the end of the round on Friday that she is happy with her overall performance on LET tournaments.
