Indian Passport renewal for child of 5 years at NY, USA?

Question

My Childs passport is about to expire in Dec 2008, My wife and kid are going on a trip to india feb 2008 and returning to usa in May 2008. Want to know following

1) do they have immigration problems while comming back to USA (he has 6 months left to expire his passport & his h4-depandant visa is valid for almost 1 year more

2) If i need to renew my childs passport, can i vist NY indian cousulate and do the renewal same day ? ( i dont want to take risk of delay through mail service)

3) If i go NY indian cousulate for my childs passport renewal, should i take him along with me ? I heard it is too crouded and wait time is long

you might want to call them up before you go and ask that .i delt with the indian embassy in houston,tx and they were wonderful.
