Indian Premier League: Arbitrators give stay on BCCI’s suspension of Rajasthan Royals
Where it all started: On
October 10, 2010, the BCCI decided to end the franchise agreement of IPL side Rajasthan Royals (along with that of Kings XI http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833) for the alleged breach of agreement by them.
As it stands now: The judge involved in hearing the arbitration case between Rajasthan Royals and the BCCI has issued a six-week stay on the expulsion of the team. In layman terms, this means that the team has
been permitted to operate as part of the IPL for six weeks. The decision stands effective immediately which has opened doors for the team temporarily. The six week duration also implies that the team can bid in the auction for the players, scheduled for January
8 next year.
While the decision stands effective, the Board for Cricket Control in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 is also restricted from defaming Rajasthan in any way. They are prevented from every step that might undermine the status of the team and might create
prejudices against them. An example can be the changing of rules of the league itself. “There will be no interference with them [Rajasthan] exercising rights under the franchise agreement,” announced Justice BN Srikrishna, the judge for the case. And he explained
that the auction will be open for them to participate in.
The BCCI, however, will challenge the verdict by moving court as a reproving step. “The BCCI will move the court tomorrow,” said a top board official in his clarification. This certainly implies that the board is not happy regarding
the decision upheld by the court. They seem concerned regarding its impact on the IPL. This has also raised alarms in the IPL itself. Officials are concerned that this decision will have significant impact on the health of the league. This might create hurdles
in the way for the auction to take place. It is also likely that the auction will not happen at all. This can go in any direction now.
The order, however, came as a sigh of relief for the dented IPL team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals. This means that they can stay in the business for some time at least. There is a provision in the law that can allow the case to be challenged
in the higher courts. This means that it will take considerable time before the result comes out. Till then, the team has the license to take part in the process of the league in a fair and comprehensive manner.
The Rajasthan Royals welcomed the verdict that was pretty much in their favour. They seem to be in a state of gratitude regarding the decision. Moreover, the urgency of the judge in handling of the case and the announcement has
pleased them further. The case is, however, yet to be resolved, which means that both parties still have a chance to win the battle once and for all.
