Indian Premier League governing council to be pruned
Lalit Modi may be fighting tooth and nail to get back into the Indian Premier League governing council, but the Indian cricket board (BCCI) seem to be bent upon clipping his wings even further. Currently, Modi is facing disciplinary charges on various counts including fraud and bidding to create a parallel IPL-like tournament, and the result of the same is pending.
However, irrespective of what happens in the disciplinary hearing, the Indian cricket board may decide to remove Modi from the IPL and the important posts within the board.
Modi still continues to remain with the BCCI despite having lost two elections because of his post as the IPL commissioner. However, he was suspended by the BCCI at the end of the third edition of the IPL and has since not attended a single disciplinary hearing or a BCCI meeting. He was appointed the chairman of the IPL governing council for a period of five years, but the BCCI is now planning to dissolve the governing council and start afresh from the next IPL. This plan could be ratified by the BCCI at the next annual general meeting which will be held on September 29.
Modi was the chief of the IPL for a period of three years, but his style of functioning seemed to have rubbed many people within the BCCI the wrong way. So, when the BCCI had suspended him as the chief of the IPL, there weren’t too many within the BCCI who backed him.
According to the newspaper reports, not only will the BCCI reduce the term of the governing council from five years to one, but will also ensure that the number of members in the council is reduced. Currently there are 13 members in the council, including three former cricketers. According to the reports, there is a chance that the number may come down to seven members, which will have a maximum of two former cricketers.
