Question:

Indian Ring Neck Bird?

I was just wondering how long should it take for her to warm up to me? I've had her for a week and a half and she won't let me hold her. She doesn't even flinch when I put my face up to her but she runs away from my hands. I want to be handling her and holding her because I've heard that they make great companions.

  1. I used to breed parrots and in my opinion Ring Necks are not the friendliest of birds. Having said that it really depends on factors like the age of the bird and wether or not it was hand raised.  Hand raised birds can be very affectionate, but if it is an old hand raised bird it could well have bonded with its original owner. If the bird was not hand raised it may take years for it to bond with you.

I know of parrots that bond with certain members of the family and take a dislike to other members.

  2. I had an Indian Ringneck that was handfed that I could never tame. They are just so skiddish.

  3. This bird requires alot of attention. and need plenty of chew toys as well. This bird is highly intelligent, easy  to talk, whistle, and to do tricks, and will mock other sounds when heard enough.

Taming your bird is all about TRUST! this is the most important issue you will have with your bird trusting YOU! She must be able to TRUST you first before you can expect her to do anything for you. She must have clipped wings this is for you to be able to handle and pick up when she is out of her cage. A cage with a large door is good for her so when you reach in and bring her out she is not harmed by catching a wing or feet on any thing. She needs a quiet time in a dim light place so she can groom rest or play. For a few hours say 2-3.

Talk with a smooth soft tone move slow pick up bird with cupped hands.Be gentle and slow so this will be a pleasant experience for her don't hold tight then next time she wont mind being picked up or handled this may take a few time doing but she will begin to realise you mean her no harm. And she will see this becomes a sanctuary for her and she will feel safe with you.

She wants to participate in most things so you will have to spend alot of time with her the more the better for her to get use to you and your handling of her. Try letting her come to your hand when you reach into the cage and feed her from your hand just be careful you dont get bite she will come to see your hand means no harm. Place hand in cage and do this slow and watch her hold hand still let her check it out and call her by name with a soft tone and tell her to come sit on my hand (name) repeat a few times if she wont remove and try later in the day. You can also try this with her place bird on shoulder (course she will fly away) arm hand  or cage, when she flys away pick her up and repeat, this method teaches her that you and her cage are safe zone if she allows pet her slow and on the back at frist. If all goes well when she is allowed to fly around the home she will only land on her cage or you. After you have this mastered do alot of talking with her.The more you talk to her and teach her words the faster she will pick them up, birds don't have long attention spans max 5-10 minutes so don't over do this she will loose instrest quick.Always say her name when you feed her she will get this in most cases first. This needs to be done often and proper for her to be a good bird for you. She will require at least 1 hour out of her cage a day for execrise, stretching, to explore and be free for a short time. This video may help you.
