Indian Spectators treated us badly at Commonwealth Games - Pakistan Hockey Team
Pakistan Hockey Federation along with the national skipper, Zeeshan Ashraf alleged on Tuesday that the crowd in New Delhi during the Commonwealth Games treated them badly which was one of the reasons for Pakistan team's poor performance in the multi discipline
event that concluded last Thursday.
PHF secretary, Asif Bajwa reflected that the player’s, right from the start of their Delhi visit, were complaining about the abusive language and insulting behaviour which in some way or the other affected their game as well.
"It was harder for our contenders when they played in India. There was more pressure on them as a result of the treatment they got from the local crowd. It was disappointing. I am not making excuses for our team losing to India but there was greater pressure
on them," said Asif while talking to the reporters.
Asif, earlier also served as the manager of Pakistan team during the 2010 Hockey World Cup, where Pakistan ended at number twelve. As a result of this disappointing performance, he was removed from his position. At the recently concluded Commonwealth Games,
Pakistan hockey team ended at number six.
Meanwhile, Pakistan hockey team captain, Zeeshan Ashraf stated that the players went there just to get humiliated. He maintained, "It was too much. The way the crowd remained away from us was meant to remind us that we were from Pakistan. Since the Mumbai
attacks, the Indian crowd tries to make life tough for us whenever we go to India. It happened to us throughout the Commonwealth Games which is unfortunate because sports should be taken as sports."
The Pakistan team was defeated by the local side in these Games but still the captain claimed that his boys fought really hard and didn’t give up till the end. He hoped that his team will perform well in the next month’s Asian Games scheduled to be held
in China.
