Indian boxers going to Olympics for first time – London 2012 Olympics
Devendro Singh has recently become one of three Indian boxers that have now qualified to be a part of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The other two Indian boxers who will be representing their country in the Olympic Games next year include Manoj Kumar and
Jai Bhagwan.
The trio have brought their nation honour by becoming the first ever boxers in Indian history to qualify for the Olympic Games. Manoj has already made his mark in the international arena for boxing by bagging Gold at the Commonwealth Games. Devendro on the
other hand is a debutant pugilist but has shown great potential by impressing both rivals as well spectators in the matches that he has fought. Jai, Manoj as well as Devendro have been able to enter the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Championship that
is currently under way in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Devendro was up against Carlos Quipo of Ecuador 18-12 in the match which helped to take the Indian player into the Olympics. In a surprising performance, Devendro was able to overcome his higher ranked opponent. On the other hand, Manoj had a tough time
dealing with his Chinese opponent Qing Hu 17-15.
Manoj made the following statements regarding the pre-quarterfinal match that he had with his Chinese opponent: "My focus was tiring him out and this is the reason why I was down by three points in the opening round because I kept my guard and was focusing
on defence. But this tactic ultimately paid off as he was tired and I managed to go on the offensive.”
Jai also had to work to his limits in order to defeat the Irish boxer David Joyce who is the seventh seed. However, Jai was able to seal the deal in the end at 32-30.
Jai, Manoj and Devendro will be representing India’s boxing for the first time in the Olympic Games which are going to be held in London. London will be playing host to the international sporting event for the third time, making it the first city in the
world to have done so thrice.
