Indian cricket board to handle IPL contracts
The Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 has announced that from the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League, they will handle the cricketers’ contract themselves. Earlier, the player contracts were handled by their agents, but with the recent reports of corruption, this seems to have been done in order to reduce the role of agents in the middle.
According to the IPL Governing Council, it was also decided that the BCCI will pay the respective cricket boards 10 per cent of the salary that they hand over to the players. So, say, if Albie Morkel is signed on by a franchise for $500,000, and Mark Boucher for $250,000, they will hand over a sum of $75,000 to the South African cricket board.
It was also reported that the cricket board had been thinking on these lines for some time now. The rationale behind this was not explained by the cricket board. But it is assumed that the one big reason for doing so is to ensure that the other cricket boards will not think twice before releasing their cricketers.
This will particularly help those smaller nations, who find it difficult to hold back the cricketers because they are too cash-strapped to offer them any kind of a good monetary deal. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 are two of the sides who can now heave a breath of sigh.
The president of BCCI, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shashank-Manohar-c89791 said, “This is the opinon of the [general council]. We don’t want role of any agents,”
Speaking of the agreement, it will be a tri-partite agreement among the players, franchise and the BCCI. According to the BCCI chief, “All player contracts will now be managed by BCCI and signed by BCCI along with the franchise and the player. A new player registration and contract management process will be detailed soon.”
He also added that the new contracts cannot be signed with players from outside the auction unless the new contract management process was released.
The basic reason behind this decision was also to remove the role of middlemen, who had to be paid by the franchise to rope in the players.
The fourth edition of the IPL starts the first week of April next year after the cricket World Cup ends, and will see ten teams participate in the tournament. There will be 74 matches played in the tournament, which is 14 more than the last edition of the tournament.
