Indian hockey team’s performance assessment made by HI: Hockey News
Hockey India (HI), yesterday, on May 31, completed its assessment regarding the country’s team performance in the last month’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup that was held in Ipoh, Malaysia.
The team’s manager Balbir Singh and the physical trainer Dr. Pradip Dutta had submitted their review report at the meeting held in New Delhi among HI’s officials, development committee, which is headed by Pargat Singh, the team’s Captain Arjun Halappa, the
head coach, Harendra Singh along with his support staff and HI's General Secretary Narinder Batra.
During the meeting, they discussed what steps could be taken in order to improve their performance in the major international appearances ahead, like the 2011 Champions Trophy and the 2012 Olympic qualifiers that are to be held in the upcoming months.
Balbir, who is one of the selectors from the HI’s selection committee, stated that one of the reasons was the physical incapability of the players to display a good game in the tournament.
When the selection committee was questioned about not properly screening the players at the trials, Balbir replied, "It is difficult to make out from trials. Our team played well in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. It is while seeing them play
in Azlan Shah, I could make out that they can't last the entire match. The four-month gap after the Asian Games has not been good for the players. I can't say how their fitness has dropped and that is something for the physical trainer to answer."
In addition to this, Pargat, a former Olympian, commented that all stake-holders of the Indian hockey have got to contribute by putting in all their best efforts mutually.
He further continued that if the team is not giving their best it means that it is missing some key element and in order to overcome this, every person must perform his role at the utmost and contribute his efforts in resolving the issue.
This includes the HI coaches, the government and the players too. Moreover, the development programmes need to be applied in the best way possible in order to improve the game.
