  1. Funeral Pyre's do still take place, there's no reason to broadcast them, so you never hear about them, that's all.

There is also a custom practiced (don't know the country) where the burning remains of the body are snatched from the fire and EATEN right there. It may have something to do with Voodoo or Witchcraft. No kidding, this is absolutely true.

I have seen film footage of this practice (snatching the remains and eating) there has to be reference to this ritual somewhere on the internet. look it up.

  2. The first answer is absolutely correct.

Only the ritual was named as SATI DAHA or SATIDAHA.

Sati means - The lady who is completely devoted to her husband.

    Daha means - to burn.

Search net with key word "Sati Daha" or "Satidaha" you would get more information.

  3. its called sati

  4. Like 'Savitri', my wife 'Swaraj' has saved me, praying in a modern hospital, Appolo, Delhi, dead for 30 minutes in Jun, 2005, our womens are religious, devoted to a 'husband' and 'Great', we must 'salute them.................. the ladies,...., in our country, INDIA..............

  5. Ya its not called satee its called Sati, In India when a Hindu religion person dies he is not buried he is burned on  a stack of woods. It was a system in earlier India Where, when a husband die the wife is burned alive with her husband. (Pretty cruel right??)  The kind of system was called sati system. Its abolished long back now....

There was a reason earlier why they had this system.. When mughals and British ruled India, there was a lot of wars going on and when the husband die, the wife's were raped and made slaves, so this system came in...

You can find lot of information in Indian history...

The sati system was abolished in 19Th century..

May be she didnt die then so they burnt her after they burnt her husband.. anyways that was a movie.. and movies dont show anything 100% true...

  6. It's called "SUTEE".  It is a custom that proves a wife's devotion to her husband.  It still happens in the rural areas with Hindus.  Mostly, the wife has nothing after the husband dies so rather than starving to death, she jumps on the funeral fire.

I've seen dead people burning in India.  It smells bad!

This is not understood in the west.  When the husband dies, the wife cashes in the insurance and starts to spend like crazy.  Too bad she is old and lumpy and look silly in all the nice new clothes.   If I had my way, I'd force her to jump in the fire.
