Indian shooters continue dominance
India won three of the four gold medals at stake in the 2010 Commonwealth Games shooting competition at the CRPF Shooting Range on Wednesday.
Gagan Narang, Anisa Syyed and Omkar Singh topped their respective events as the host nation increased their medal tally to five gold and five silver medals after two days of competition.
Narang out-duelled compatriot Abhinav Bindra in the men's 10-metre air rifle. The world record holder scored 703.6 points to beat Beijing Olympics champion Bindra, who scored 698 points. England's James
Huckle fired 693.5 points to secure the bronze medal.
"I and Bindra go back a long way. We share a good relationship, there is a lot to learn from each other. It feels nice to compete with him," Narang said.
Bindra also praised his rival. "Narang is on fire. I am delighted for him. He is an outstanding shooter - one of the best shooters in the world and he has been very consistent over the last few years,"
he said.
Syyed gave India their second gold medal of the day when she ruled the women's 25m pistol event. The 27-year-old scored 786.8 points in the final to beat compatriot Rahi Sarnobat (781).
"I told myself not to repeat the mistakes I made yesterday. I stuck to my technique and thus shot better today," said Syyed, who partnered with Sarnobat in the pairs event on Tuesday.
Bibiana Ng of Malaysia snared the bronze medal with a 778.2 tally.
Singh won India’s third gold medal of the day by ruling the men's 50m pistol event. He fired 653.6 points in the final round to win the title. Singapore's Gai Bin settled for the silver medal with 649.6
points while compatriot Lim Swee Hon pocketed the bronze medal with a 644.7 final score.
England denied India a sweep of all four gold medals at stake when they won the men's double trap pairs event.
Steven Walton and Steven Scott combined for 189 points to edge the Indian pair of Ronjan Sodhi and Asher Noria by one point. The English pair also set a new Games record, eclipsing the mark set by Australia's
Russell Mark and Craig Trembath four years ago in Melbourne. The Malaysian father-son duo of Edward and Benjamin Khor claimed the bronze medal with 185 points.
Today's action will feature shooters competing in the men's 10m air pistol pairs, men's rapid-fire pistol pairs, men's double trap singles and women's 50m rifle three position singles.
