Indian sports marred with corruption allegations besides those relating to Commonwealth Games preparations
Every few minutes the news elaborates a new problem the Indian Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee is facing and a new allegation that is placed on the host nation for showing irresponsible behaviour towards the construction of the venues before the
Commonwealth Games. After the dozens of complaints against the poor hygienic and security conditions of the Games Village. The Indian sports management are being attacked by the local media and public who are demanding immediate action from the officials who
oversee the sports activities in India.
Hockey is one of the most appreciated games in the country for example, and what is sad is that there is no official governing body avalible for the organization of events for the promotion and acknowledgement of the sport and its players. Two years ago,
the hockey federation of India was stripped off by the Indian Olympic Association after the sports Ministry found out about the corruption and widespread bribery that was prevalent in the sport. This scandal was popularly known as the pay-to-play scandal.
Additionally, India is a country where cricket is the most fancied sport, the most celebrated event of the sport, known as the Indian Premier League has been rubbed in with a tremendous amount of allegations of kickbacks and bid rigging during the awarding
of franchises. It has barely been two years since the birth of the Indian Premier League.
Talk about any sport in the country, and it is brim full of scandals, and the worst part is that neither the sports Ministry in the country, nor the IOA, has formed a committee to look into the matter and solve these never ending issues. Just as the coach
of the national women’s field hockey resigned in July this year, because he was constantly being accused of sexually harassing the members of the hockey squad. There was no authority to probe into the matter. Yet again, there was a doping scandal that resulted
in the dropping out of Indian swimmers and wrestlers from the Commonwealth Games.
The country resides on the 84th position in the 180 countries list in Transparency International annual corruption perception survey. Thus, it is not very surprising if corruption is prevalent in sports in the country.
In June this year, a couple of athletes of India including some Olympic champions founded an organizations backed by a few politicians. The organization is known as Clean Sports India and is working in the country to wipe out corruption and other scandals
from sports in the country.
