Is this real news?

An Indian woman shopping in a NJ Sabzimandi in Edison was bit by a snake reportedly hiding inside a vegetable box where she was shoving her hand to pick whatever she was picking?

I heard it from some ppl in NJ / PA area that she died instantly and had foam coming out of her mouth?

I could not find any credible news source on this incident, so I am starting to think that this is just another desi rumor.

I mean this kind of thing is nothing new, it has happened to many ppl in the past.

Anybody with any sources?

  1. its fake, the story isnt anywhere..people just keep saying they heard it from their dads friends sisters uncles cousins son in law..theres nobody that was actually there..and im pretty sure if this woman actually died it would be reported somewhere..

  2. I am not sure if i can say if this is a rumor or not, but four weeks back when i was in subzi mandi i did see an ambulance , taking a person out of the store in a stretcher. I am not sure if it has any relevance to the snake incident. But well it could be a possibility. They sell rotten coconuts and a whole bunch of stuff they should have thrashed weeks back so nothing is impossible. They don't seem to adhere to rules and codes of cleaniness or hygine coz they know they have a business out of us anyway.

rumor or not subzi mandi needs to get a little less crappy

  3. It has to be Rumor because I used to work with Subzi Mandi ,  I called them up him up and he said that it is all rumor and it is not true.........I has to be rumor

  4. This is actually true. Not a rumor. She was picking out okra and she got bit once. Then she licked and her finger and began picking again. Then she bit again. In a few moments, the girl fainted and the ambulance came. For proof, the Subzi Mandi at Oak Tree Road is actually closed down right now as we speak. It's been closed for a week.

  5. wow really ******* ignorant people on this board, yes it's very true, my sister lives near there and told me about it. Rather than pray for her family, all I hear is that it's somehow a conspiracy. Hope if someone close to you dies in tragic fashion, their legacy will be a rumor..

  6. This is rumour guys. Do you think Edison police and the media (CNN, MSNBC etc.) stupid? They always look for such incidents and then blow them out. Relax and welcome the fall season...

  7. guys its true my father's frd was there

and this is not a rumor...

  8. Rumors... Looks like there are people having fun passing around such rumors in all cities.. Read this another post when I tried to search for the validity of this news.. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...

  9. There are two Subzi Mandis , one behind the dimple fast food and another  is the large vegetable store, both on Oaktree Road , which is the shop in which this occurrred?

  10. My mom just called me up to warn me about going to Subzi Mandi. I thought the story sounded ridiculous so decided to do my own reseach.  As expected this story appears NO WHERE on the internet.  I even called up the store to ask about the validity of the story.  Again NOT TRUE. If this was a true story NJ.com would be the first to launch this news on their website.  I happen to live in Edison and I heard absolutely nothing.  In fact I was at Subzi Mandi a few days ago.

  11. Hey there ! Yes, this is the truth bcuz my dad's friends was there and told him about it. She was picking pinda and she felt something bit her hand so she put her hand in her mouth. Then she didnt feel so good so she told her family that she would wait in the car. Only a few seconds after getting into the car she died. When the store people checked inside the pinda box there was a poisonous snake. The lady consumed poison and thats how she died. Really sad )=

  12. Two (im)possibilities......

    1. The Okra or Pinda was cut fresh from the garden and brought to Sabzi mandi, not even refrigerated,,,so that Snake managed to stay there and survive.

    2. Or May be like a Bollywood movie....the near by Patel Cash and Carry owner hired a snake charmer and made him catch a snake and brought it to Sabzi mandi...and placed in the Okra box!!!! May be FBI will get involved to resolve this mystery!!!!!

  13. This isn't true. I went to Sabzi Mandi today. I agree with that person who wrote above that if this had actually happened, they would have shut the store down. The store is definitely not closed. They are as busy as they have always been. Furthermore, they would have definitely had this on the news. I went into the store today to ask about if this was true. A person who worked there told me that they are trying to look for the person who spread this rumor. There is so much competition on Oak Tree, especially with that Sabzi Mandi, I wouldn't be surprised if some other grocery store put this up.

  14. I really think this is a rumor, cuz my mom and i owned an indian store and all the vegetables are put in the fridge at night to avoid bugs and rotting of the vegetables. all except things like potatoes, onionl, ginger and garlic. and if it is true would you think that the person's family members would not bring this to the attention of the media. especially the DESI community. anyhow if it is true then my sympathy with the family.

  15. This smells like an urban legend. I know that people like to snap off the tips of the okra/ladyfinger to test for freshness. This is just a legend to stop people doing this as it creates wasted stock for the shop keeper. Also this myth could be started by someone who wants to bring Subzi Mandi into disrepute.

I have heard of several different versions of this story. In one it was a scorpion and not a snake. In another it was a teen aged woman and in another it was married woman.

    Just check this url out:

    Also This one:

After research, this has to be an urban legend. So be careful what you read/hear and do not jump to conclusions.

  16. Is this for real?

I am confused whether to believe it or not. I just received a email from one of my friend who lives in NJ ( I reside in VA).  I always shop in Subzi Mandi when I visit NJ.

Please don't make (If) any rumors of this kind. Now I am totally paranoid about buying vegetables from Desi stores.

  17. This is actually not a rumor, its true. She was pickig out okra, this happened at the little subzi mandi behind dimple on oak tree. she actually just went in to pick okra...put her hand in the basket and felt something sting her...then she put her hand in there again and when she pulled out her hand it was bleeding so she licked it. she then went to the counter to pay for it and passed out with foam on her mouth. she was a mother of 2 kids.

  18. I completely agree with earth worm example..***** find any proof for this incident.

  19. Just a rumor. Heard the same thing about a grocery store in Texas. Could be a terrorist plot to kill at the Bindi lovers.

  20. Another attempt by the liberal media to hide the truth.

  21. Trust me, it's a rumor.

  22. Wow..if this is true..it was very sad to hear that some one died because a snake bit..

  23. I have to doubt the truth of this story.  There are very few species of snake that are venomous enough to kill quickly or even in a couple hours.  The most that could are too large to be hidden in a box of produce.

  24. it has to be true. I will tell you why.

I got this story from 5 different indpendent sources.

1> from a friend at work in NYC

2> from some friends friend from Edision

3> From some random person from tenton

    4> one even from seattle

5> then i found one link on sulekha.com

How can all 5 sources be wrong?

there had to have been a snake.

P.S. i am obviously being sarcastic (for the benefit of those who missed it)

and tom J, you family emmbers r lying

  25. People keep telling me that it's true..I mean it can be true b/c indian grocery stores are not necessarily the cleanest places in the world. My mom went there recently and all the workers there kept saying that this is all a rumor, but they're only saying that b/c this is the  business world and they're only trying to prevent their store from losing more customers.
