Indian women hockey team’s head coach in efforts to reach out for the Olympics: Hockey News
C. R. Kumar, the Indian women hockey team’s head coach is making efforts over the team with an aim to clear the Olympic qualification stage that is to be held in February, 2012.
He is experimenting by making various combinations of players in order to identify the best squad that will help him accomplish the target set for the team’s future.
The closest preparatory international ahead is the Women’s Champions Challenge.
A training camp is under-way at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, India that is intended for the preparation of the upcoming Champions Challenge for women to be held in Dublin, Ireland from June 18-26.
Even though the trials are completed, the final list of players is yet to be announced. The selection committee is giving a second thought to it because it does not want any player to get disheartened that may possibly affect the preparations being made
for the championship.
At present, the female athletes are pushing hard towards attaining fitness to the utmost and are playing practice matches against the domestic boy’s teams.
Moreover, the coach advised the players to put emphasis over what strategy the opponent follows during the match and to change your own game plan according to that. Kumar also made changes in the position of the players during the practice.
Probably, the selected squad will be revealed within the next ten days that will be composed of both the experienced players as well as the young athletes, including six that had been picked out in the National championship that had previously taken place
at Rai.
Kumar commented, “This is a good opportunity for the young players to be part of the training camp with the experienced girls. They should make the most of it.”
According to Kumar, the team really needs to work on its strategic approach towards playing the game and they lack the tactics to be applied in the international competitions.
He further added, “If the opponent team is making several attacks, that means our midfield is not working properly. So, we have to address that problem.”
The defensive side is where the team is lacking and it needs to be sorted out.
India is selected in Pool B of the Irish Championship along with Azerbaijan, Ireland and Spain whereas Pool A features USA, Japan, Scotland and South Africa.
