Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, and San Antonio Silver Stars win - WNBA Roundup June 11, 2011 – Part 1
On Saturday night, six Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) teams went head-to-head. Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, and San Antonio Silver Stars came out on top in their respective games.
Here is an overview of the matchups:
Indiana Fever 86 - New York Liberty 80
Indiana Fever left it late and went on a 9-0 run down the stretch to earn an impressive 80-86 victory over the New York Liberty at Prudential Center. Essence Carson had a dominating performance once again and led the team with
a game-high 23 points on a 7-for-15 shooting from the field.
Tamika Catchings had a team-high 19 points, four assists, and three steals, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from free throw line. Katie Douglas totalled 17 points, four assists, and four rebounds while Jeanette
Pohlen scored 14 points, including 4-for-4 from three-point range for the Indiana outfit
Liberty were led by Plenette Pierson, who chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds while Nicole Powell, and Cappie Pondexter scored 13 points each.
The game panned out evenly as both teams displayed some breathtaking offensive skill. Liberty were leading by three with nearly a minute to go but Indiana scored the last five points of the to take a 29-27 into the second quarter.
New York made a comeback early in the second quarter and took a 33-29 lead at 07:45 mark. Indiana then scored four straight points to take over the lead 37-33 with 05:28 to go in the second. Liberty battled back late in the second
though and raced off to 12-4 spurt to bag a 49-41 lead with 37 seconds to go in the quarter. However, Douglas’ driving lay-up and a pair of free throw by Smith in the last 24 seconds of the quarter cut Indiana’s deficit to 49-45 at halftime.
New York continued to play good offense in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 70-57 deep into the period. Fever however once again played well in the closing seconds of the quarter and responded with five unanswered
points to cut the margin to eight points, 70-62, heading into the fourth.
They continued to press on in the fourth and made it a three point game, 80-77, with 02:59 to go in the fourth quarter. Indiana however unleashed a nine consecutive point assault at that point, completely choking Liberty in the
clutch to seal a brilliant win.
Chicago Sky 84 - Washington Mystics 77
At the Verizon Center, Centre Sylvia Fowles notched up a team-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field, to spearhead Chicago Sky to an electrifying 84-77 victory over the Washington Mystics.
Epiphanny Prince added 20 points while Cathrine Kraayeveld had 19 points and a career-high six three-pointers in the second straight victory of Chicago. Matee Ajavon registered a game-high 24 points and grabbed five rebounds and
four assists for the Mystics.
