Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury win: WNBA Roundup July 05, 2011 – Part 1
On Tuesday night, three games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of these games:
Indiana Fever 78 - Seattle Storm 61
At the Conseco Fieldhouse, Jessica Davenport erupted with a team-high 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots as Indiana Fever extended their winning streak to five games with a 78-61 victory over Seattle Storm.
Tamika Catchings had 11 points, six rebounds and four steals while Tangela Smith chipped in with 10 points for Indiana. Shavonte Zellous scored all of her eight points in the crucial last quarter. Erin Phillips played her first
game since 2009 and ended with seven points and three steals for the victors.
Sue Bird led Seattle with a game-high 21 points, five assists and three rebounds. The 30-year-old guard was brilliant form the three-point range, pinning 5 of 6 three-pointers.
Swin Cash punctuated 13 points and grabbed four rebounds while Lecoe Willingham contributed eight points and eight rebounds for the Storm, who have lost two of their last three games of the season.
Seattle held a 9-6 lead early in the first quarter before Indiana scored 12 unanswered points and went ahead by 18-9 with 04:34 to go in the quarter. Storm made a cosmetic comeback in the closing minutes of the opening period,
but Fever still managed to take a 23-18 lead into the second.
Indiana outscored the Storm 19-9 in the second quarter and stretched their lead to 15 points, 42-27, at halftime. Seattle battled back in the third quarter and cut the first half deficit to 11 points, 58-47, heading into the final
stanza.
Storm continued to fight back and made it a six-point contest early in the fourth quarter, 60-54. Indiana turned the heat on after that and scored six straight points to take a 13-point advantage, 67-54, with 05:50 to go in the
game. Fever then maintained their lead down the stretch to seal the victory.
Chicago Sky 78 - Washington Mystics 65
Sylvia Fowles recorded a double-double with a season-high 34 points and 16 rebounds as the Chicago Sky manhandled the Washington Mystics 78-65 at Allstate Arena, snapping their three-game losing streak.
Fowles, the league's leading scorer with 21.9 points per game, shot 10 of 16 from the field and 14 of 17 from free throw line. Sky shot 48.1 percent from the field and 33.3 from three-point range overall, while Mystics shot just
38.9 percent from the floor and 7.7 percent from the 3-point range. Epiphanny Prince added 14 points and five steals while Michelle Snow pulled down 11 rebounds for Chicago.
