Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream win - WNBA Roundup August 9, 2011: Part 1
Six games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Indiana Fever 81 – San Antonio Silver Stars 68
Tamika Catchings racked up a game-high 21 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots as Indiana Fever defeated San Antonio Silver Stars 81-68 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Erin Phillips had 18 points, three rebounds and two steals while Katie Douglas added 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Fever, who have won six of their previous 10 games.
Becky Hammon led the Silver Stars with 19 points while Sophia Young totalled 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Scholanda Robinson chipped in with 12 points and three steals while Robinson came off the bench with 11 points,
three assists and three rebounds in the loss.
Indiana shot 44.8 percent (26 for 58) from the field and held San Antonio to 43.4 percent (23 for 53). They held the visiting team to just 23 points in the first half and carried a 16-point lead, 39-23, at halftime. Fever maintained
their lead in the third period and stretched their lead to 19 points, 63-44, heading into the fourth.
Silver Stars did not get any closer than nine points in the fourth quarter and Indiana walked away with 16th victory of this season.
Atlanta Dream 72 – Washington Mystics 70
At Verizon Centre, Sancho Lyttle hit a game-winning jumper in the last second of the game and Atlanta Dream beat Washington Mystics 72-70.
Atlanta’s forward Angel McCoughtry scored a team-high 19 points, pinning 10 of 11 free throws, dished out five assists and had four steals. Erika de Souza had 12 rebounds, 18 points and four blocks in the second consecutive victory
of Atlanta. Iziane Castro Marques came off the bench with 10 points in the victory.
Matee Ajavon led all the scorers with 28 points on a 10 for 17 shooting from the field and 5 for 6 from free throw line. Crystal Langhorne contributed 23 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Marissa Coleman ended with 10
rebounds in the loss.
Atlanta shot 44.4 percent from the floor, limiting the Mystics to just 34.8 percent. Dream committed 21 turnovers while Washington committed just 16.
Atlanta and Washington scored 22 points apiece in the first period but Dream found their way to take a one-point lead, 39-38, at halftime. Atlanta pushed their lead to three points, 51-48, at the end of the third period.
Mystics made a great comeback in the fourth quarter and held a 70-65 lead with 39 seconds to go in the game. McCoughtry then hit a three-pointer and Price followed her with a layup to knot the game at 70. With the clock running
down, Dream’s forward Lyttle hit a 13-foot jumper to seal the victory.
