Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream win - WNBA Roundup June 14, 2011
On Tuesday night, four teams were seen in action in the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief insight into the two match-ups:
Indiana Fever 82 - Tulsa Shock 74
Katie Douglas-Brown scored a game-high 22 points, shooting 6-for-9 from three-point range, and clutched seven rebounds as Indiana Fever beat the Tulsa Shock 82-74 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Jessica Davenport came off the bench with 14 points, scoring 10 of them in the fourth quarter, and seven rebounds for Indiana while Briann January ended with 12 points and a game high 10 assists. Erin Phillips scored 10 points
along with five boards, two assists, shooting 4-for-4 from the field.
Ivory Latta headed Tulsa with 19 points and five assists while Jennifer Lacy chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds. Kayla Pedersen added 13 points; Andrea Riley scored 10 points, while Tiffany Jackson pulled down game-highest
11 rebounds in Tulsa’s fifth consecutive defeat of the current season.
Indiana got off to a good start and held a 24-16 lead after 12 minutes. Tulsa turned it on in the second quarter and went on a 6-0 run in the last one and half minute, converting an eight-point deficit into a 43-42 lead at halftime.
Both teams played a very close game in the third quarter but Fever managed to carry a one-point edge into the fourth. With the scored tied at 69 and 03:59 remaining in the buzzer, Shock went on a 13-5 run to seal the victory in
the final stretch.
Atlanta Dream 79 - New York Liberty 58
The Eastern Conference champion Atlanta Dream earned their first victory of the season, topping the New York Liberty 79-58 at Prudential Center. All-Star Angel McCoughtry returned after missing the first three games of this season
and led Atlanta with 18 points, shooting 5-for-5 from free throw line.
Erika de Souza added 12 points and five rebounds while Sancho Lyttle had 10 points and two assists in the victory. Essence Carson topped all the scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds while centre Kia Vaughn punctuated 16 points
and seven rebounds for Liberty.
McCoughtry played well and scored 12 of her 18 points in the first quarter as Dream took a 23-16 lead into the second frame. Atlanta continued to play a tight defensive game and limited Liberty to just 16 points in the second quarter,
widening their lead to 44-32 at halftime.
Trailing by 12 points after the first half, New York failed to show even a semblance of a fight in the second half. Atlanta maintained their double-digit lead throughout to grab their first success of the season.
