Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky win – WNBA Roundup July 09, 2011 (Part 1)
Four games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Saturday, July 9, 2011.Here is a brief overview of the games:
Indiana Fever 68 – Washington Mystics 57
At Conseco Fieldhouse, Erin Phillips scored a game-high 14 points as Indiana Fever won their sixth straight game with a 68-57 victory over Washington Mystics.
Tamika Catchings was superb on the night as well. She notched up 10 points, seven rebounds, six steals, four assists and three blocks in the victory. Katie Douglas added 12 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists
while Jessica Davenport and Shavonte Zellous racked up 11 points each for Indiana, who defeated Washington for the second time during their winning streak.
Nicky Anosike headed the Mystics with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals in Washington’s third consecutive loss. Marissa Coleman racked up 11 points, hitting 3 of 5 from three-point range, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds
in the losing effort. Indiana shot 46.7 percent from the field and limited the Mystics to just 38.6 percent.
The Mystics came out strong in the opening period and shot 10 for 19 to take a 24-14 lead into the second. Fever limited the visiting team to just nine points in the second quarter but also failed to convert their own shots as
Washington still managed to maintain a 33-25 advantage at halftime.
Indiana outscored the Mystics 24-17 in the third quarter and trimmed the eight-point halftime deficit to just one, 50-49, heading into the last quarter. Fever carried the momentum and race to a 59-55 lead with 05:34 to go in the
fourth quarter. Anosike responded with a lay-up to cut the margin to two at 59-57, however, Indiana scored nine consecutive points down the stretch to seal the victory.
Chicago Sky 81 - Atlanta Dream 69
Epiphanny Prince totalled 24 points, three rebounds and three steals as Chicago Sky defeated Atlanta Dream 81-69 at Allstate Arena.
Prince nailed 11 of 12 free throw attempts in Chicago’s second straight victory. Courtney Vandersloot had 16 points, a game-high nine assists and three steals while Michelle Snow contributed 13 points and seven rebounds along with
a game best six blocks in the victory. Sylvia Fowles added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Chicago, who have won three of their last six games.
Angel McCoughtry finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals to lead Atlanta. Erika de Souza added 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Iziane Castro Marques ended with 12 points
and six rebounds in the loss.
Castro Marques scored seven of her points in the first quarter as Atlanta held a 12-point lead, 22-10, after 10 minutes. Chicago made a cosmetic comeback in the second period, but Dream still maintained a 39-31 lead, heading into
the locker room.
Sky finally broke even in the third when Vandersloot’s lay-up with 07:39 to go tied the game at 41. Atlanta responded though and with nearly four minutes to go McCoughtry drove to the rim to put Atlanta ahead by 52-45. However,
Sky countered with a 7-1 run to cut the Dream’s lead to just one at the end of third.
Chicago took a 62-59 advantage with 05:54 to go in the fourth quarter but McCoughtry answered with four straight points to give Atlanta a 63-62 lead. Chicago though finally pulled away with the game in the clutch and scored nine
unanswered points to put the game out of Dream’s reach.
