Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx win – WNBA Roundup July 31, 2011 (Part 2)
Indiana Fever shot 52.2 percent (36 for 69) from the floor and 72.7 percent (16 for 22) from the line. Los Angeles Sparks, on the other hand, shot 35.9 percent (23 for 64) from the field and 81.2 (13 for 16) from free throw line.
Indiana outscored Los Angeles in rebounds, 41-32.
Six different players scored for Indiana in the first ten minutes of the game as they carried a 27-15 lead into the second. The Fever once again limited Los Angeles to just 15 points in the second period, stretching their lead
to 53-30, heading into the locker room.
Leading by 23 points at halftime, the Fever outplayed the Sparks 24-16 in the third period, making it 77-46 before the final period. Los Angeles did not get closer than 30 points in the entire fourth quarter and Indiana walked
away with another huge home victory.
Minnesota Lynx 70 - San Antonio Silver Stars 69
Lindsay Whalen scored a season-high 23 points, including a game-winning fade away jumper with 1.5 seconds to go, and Minnesota Lynx defeated San Antonio Silver Stars 70-69 for their sixth consecutive victory. The Lynx’s current
winning streak is their longest single-season winning streak in the history of franchise.
Whalen also added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in the victory. The player shot 10 for 19 from the field in her 30 minutes of action.
Seimone Augustus added 16 points, four assists and two steals while Taj McWilliams-Franklin contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Lynx, who are heading the league with a 13-4 record. Rebekkah Brunson grabbed
a game-high 13 rebounds in the victory.
Jia Perkins led the Silver Stars with 18 points, three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Becky Hammon had 15 points and six assists while Sophia Young added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals for San Antonio, who
saw their two-game winning streak snapped.
Danielle Robinson also punctuated 10 points, dished out five assist and pulled four rebounds for Silver Stars, who are second in the West with an 11-6 record.
Minnesota shot 46.3 percent (31 for 67) from the field and 45.5 percent (5 for 11) from free throw line. However, San Antonio shot 39.3 percent (24 for 61) from the floor and 76.5 percent (13 for 17) from the line.
Minnesota opened the first quarter on a 10-3 run to take initial but San Antonio scored eight points in the last two minutes of the quarter to take a 25-10 lead into the second period.
The Silver Stars outscored Lynx 17-10 in the third quarter, pushing their lead to 42-30 at intermission.
Minnesota limited the hosts to just 13 points in third quarter and converted the 12-point first half deficit onto one-point lead, 56-55, heading into the fourth.
San Antonio held a 69-68 lead with 01:16 to go in the game but Whalen responded with a brilliant jumper from the corner to seal the victory.
