Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury win: WNBA Roundup June 25, 2011
On Saturday June 25, 2011, two games took place in Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief insight into the two match-ups:
Indiana Fever 75 – Connecticut Sun 70
Tamika Catchings recorded her 70th career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds as Indiana Fever cruised past Connecticut Sun 75-70 at Conseco Fieldhouse. With this win, Fever surged to the first-place in the Eastern Conference.
Tammy Sutton-Brown came off the bench with 12 points while Briann January contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in Fever’s second straight victory of the season.
Renee Montgomery had a game-high 19 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals in the losing effort while Asjha Jones scored 18 points and five rebounds and Tina Charles added 12 points and 11 rebounds in Connecticut’s
second consecutive defeat. Kara Lawson also ended with 10 points in the loss.
Montgomery scored six of her points in the first quarter as Connecticut held a 24-18 lead into the second. However, Indiana turned it on in the second quarter and crushed Fever 21-8, converting the first period deficit into a seven-point
lead, 39-32, at halftime.
The Sun successfully erased the first half lead and took a 45-44 lead with 04:52 remaining in the third quarter. Indiana then responded with a blistering 16-4 run to take a 60-49 edge into the fourth. However Connecticut fought
back.
Montgomery hit a crucial three-pointer to cut the Connecticut’s deficit to just two points, 72-70, with 13.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Catchings hit a pair of free throw and Shyra Ely drove to the rim in
the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Phoenix Mercury 86 - Chicago Sky 78
At Allstate Arena, Diana Taurasi posted a team-high 23 points and grabbed four rebounds as Phoenix Mercury won their fourth straight game with an impressive 86-78 victory over Chicago Sky.
Penny Taylor had 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while Candice Dupree scored all 13 of her points in the second half and grabbed eight rebounds in Phoenix’s victory.
Sylvia Fowles scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Epiphanny Prince racked up 16 points for the Sky, who have lost three of their previous four games.
The top scorer of the show, Fowles scored 12 of her points in the first half to help Chicago to maintain a 40-37 advantage at halftime.
Mercury opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to carry a 46-40 lead. In the passage that followed, Phoenix continued their offensive onslaught and widened their lead to 13 points, 60-47, with 01:10 left in the third. Chicago however
went on a 6-2 in the last 59 seconds of the quarter to cut the margin to nine, 62-53, heading into the final stanza.
Phoenix maintained their hold on Sky throughout the final period to walk away with another victory.
