Indiana Fever and San Antonio Silver Star bag home wins - WNBA Roundup 16th June
Two matches were played in the WNBA on 16th June with Indiana Fever grabbing a win against the visiting Chicago Sky and San Antonio Silver Star handing out a crushing defeat to Los Angeles Sparks. Let`s round up the
proceedings of the day.
1. Chicago Sky versus Indiana Fever
In the first matchup of the night, Indiana Fever playing in front of their home crowd at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse defeated Chicago Sky 84-70 to end their three game losing streak. The win was made possible due to the exploits
of Jessica Davenport while coming off the bench.
Davenport hit all of her 9 field goal attempts in the game to rack up 19 points which earned her nothing but praise from her team mates.
“Today we just talked about taking every single quarter,'' Tamika Catchings said. “Ten minute quarters. Ten minute games like we do in practice. ... Our bench was huge and (Jessica Davenport) had an amazing game tonight going against
Sylvia (Fowles).''
Catchings herself had 12 points in the game with most of them coming from the charity stripe. She shot the ball 6 of 8 from the line to cross Lisa Leslie for most made career free throws.
For the visiting Chicago team, Sylvia Fowles scored a game high of 26 points while Swin Cash chipped in with 15 points. Sky were let down in the game by the amount of free throws they made, they had a total of 17 attempts on the
night but were only successful in converting 9 of them.
On the other hand, Indiana were rather better from the line by making 18 of 22 free throws.
2. San Antonio Silver Stars versus Los Angeles Sparks
In the second game of the night, San Antonio Silver Star required a 24 point effort from both Becky Hammon and Sophia Young to come out 98-85 winners over Los Angeles Sparks in overtime.
Danielle Adams and Jia Perkins also played well for 18 and 10 points respectively for the Silver Stars but the star performance of the game was showcased by Young. In the post match interview San Antonio Head Coach Dan Hughes shed
light on her performance.
"The leadership of Sophia Young was amazing,'' Dan Hughes said. ``Sophia Young played with an intensity that was infectious for us. I've benefited from watching a lot of Sophia's games, but that one really showed not only her offensive
end but her defensive end. She was incredibly active and really led us in this situation.''
On the other hand Alana Beard was very impressive with 23 points in the game while Kristi Toliver chipped in with 16 points but their efforts were not enough to prevent a second loss for LA in as many games.
Sparks were immensely let down by their shooting in overtime as they shot the ball just 1 of 9 from the field after making a tremendous effort to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
