Indiana Fever and San Antonio Silver Stars win: WNBA Roundup June 28, 2011 – Part 1
On Tuesday night, six teams of the Women’s National Basketball Association went head-to-head. Here are the highlights of the three games:
Indiana Fever 91 - Phoenix Mercury 86
At Conseco Fieldhouse, the Indiana Fever defeated Phoenix Mercury 91-86 to record their fourth consecutive victory of this season. Katie Douglas scored a game-high 26 points on a 9 for 15 shooting from the field, and dished out
six assists in nearly 36 minutes. The 32-year-old pinned 6 of 9 three-pointers.
Jessica Davenport was the second leading scored with 25 points. Davenport hit a phenominal 10 of 11 from the field. Tamika Catchings ended with 14 points, seven assists, five rebounds, four steals and three blocks in the victory.
Forward Catchings praised the Davenport’s effort and said, "She's a dominant force down there," "When you get behind her, it's hard to block her shot and it's hard to get in front of her."She has been so productive for us. I expect
a lot more from her."
DeWanna Bonner led Phoenix with 15 points, three assists and three rebounds while Diana Taurasi also scored 15 points. However, Taurasi also committed five turnovers. Marie Ferdinand-Harris came off the bench with 13 points, Penny
Taylor totalled 10 points and five assists for Mercury, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
Candice Dupree, one of the leading scorers for Phoenix this season, could not find her rhythm this time and ended with just nine points - her only single-digit in this season.
Mercury finished the night with 7 for 14 result from 3-point range and 15 for 24 from free throw line. They also committed 19 turnovers. The Pacers hit 7 of 15 three-pointers and 14 of 18 free throws.
Indiana headed the first three quarters of the game and carried an eight-point advantage, 73-65, into the final period. Phoenix kept fighting in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to just one, 78-77, with 06:34 to go in
the game. However, Indiana scored the next eight straight points of the quarter to take an 86-77 lead and never trailed again.
San Antonio Silver Stars 84 - Chicago Sky 74
Five players scored in double figures as the San Antonio Silver Stars improved to a league-leading 7-1 record by topping the Chicago Sky 84-74 at Allstate Arena.
Sophia Young scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds while rookie Danielle Adams chipped in with 16 points and three blocks in the victory. Becky Hammon punctuated 14 points and five assists while Ruth Riley and Danielle Robinson
added 10 points each in the third straight victory for San Antonio.
Epiphanny Prince added 19 points, four assists and four steals to lead Chicago while Sylvia Fowles registered a double-double with 16 points and a game best 12 rebounds.
