Indiana Fever 65 - Chicago Sky 57
Shooting guard Katie Douglas pounded a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds as Indiana Fever knocked down Chicago Sky 65-57 at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday night. Tangela Smith contributed 16 points and five rebounds, hitting
4 of 7 from behind the arc, while Tamika Catchings added 15 points and nine rebounds in Indiana’s sixth consecutive victory against Chicago.
For Chicago, point guard Epiphanny Prince had a game-high 20 points while centre Sylvia Fowles had 10 points and seven boards.
Indiana got off to a terrific start as they reeled off a 10-1 run early in the first quarter, taking a 21-13 lead into the second. In the second quarter, Sky made considerable inroads into Fever’s lead, but they were unable to
surpass the deficit and finished the half, down by 4 at 33-29.
Indiana regained the momentum in the third and finished the quarter and widened their lead to 49-42, heading into the fourth.
The Sky opened the fourth quarter on a 9-6 run and cut the deficit to four points with 06:13 to go in the game. However, Douglas took the charge and scored the next eight points of the game to seal the season’s first victory for
Chicago.
San Antonio Silver Stars 93 - Tulsa Shock 73
Forward Sophia Young added a game-high 20 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the field, as the San Antonio Silver Stars topped the Tulsa Shock 93-73 at AT&T Center. Guard Becky Hammon had 18 points and five rebounds while Jia Perkins
came off the bench with 17 points in the Silver Stars’ first season-opening win since 2006. Forward-centre Ruth Riley chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds for San Antonio, shooting 6-for-6 from the field.
Only three players of the Tulsa Shock scored points in double figures. Centre Liz Cambage led Shock with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Ivory Latta scored 15 points while forward Amber Holt punctuated 11 points and eight
rebounds in the losing effort.
The Silver Stars were fantastic throughout the first quarter as they hit five three-pointers on their way to a 27-12 lead after 12 minutes. San Antonio piled on more offensive pressure in the second quarter and outplayed Tulsa
24-14, to carry a 51-26 lead into the locker room.
Trailing by 25 points at intermission, Shock fought hard in the third quarter. However, the Silver Stars restricted them to 70-55 at the end of third. San Antonio maintained their double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter
to walk away with a victory.
