Indiana Fever down Washington Mystics 68-57; Win sixth straight – WNBA Recap
Tamika Catchings led the way with 10 points, seven rebounds, six steals, four assists and three blocks as Indiana Fever thumped the Washington Mystics 68-57 on Saturday night. In doing so, Fever extended their winning streak to
six games. This was Indiana’s second win over the Mystics in the six game streak.
Catchings swatted five steals in the fourth quarter leaving everybody in the arena awestruck. Indiana’s guard Erin Phillips said post game, "In one way, it doesn't surprise me that she does things like that," "I am in awe of her.
She can turn a game straight around."
Phillips herself scored 14 points to lead five players in double figures. She also contributed three assists and three rebounds, shooting 5 for 9 from the field and 2 for 2 from three-point range.
Katie Douglas also had 12 points, going 6-of-10, four steals, three rebounds and three assists for Fever, who have the best 9-3 record so far in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Indiana got 11 points each from
Jessica Davenport and Shavonte Zellous, who also grabbed six rebounds in the victory.
Nicky Anosike led Washington with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Marissa Coleman racked up 11 points, including three treys, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Mystics, who have lost three straight games and
have won just one of their previous eight games.
Indiana shot 28 for 60 from the field, 2 for 7 from 3-point range and 10 for 12 from free throw line. Mystics, on the other hand, hit 22 for 57 from the floor, 8 for 16 from three-point range and 5 for 10 from the line.
Mystics got off to a very good start and converted 10 of the total 19 field goal attempts in the first quarter to take a ten-point lead, 24-14. After a good 10 minutes from the floor, the Mystics froze in the second quarter. They
managed to score only 9 points in the frame. However, they were lucky that Fever followed suit and canned only 11 as the teams headed into the break with Mystics still holding on to a 8 point lead at 33-25.
After a shaky first half, Indiana really turned on the heat in the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to just one, 36-35, midway through the quarter. Washington responded with a 8-2 run to go ahead by 44-37, but Fever again
sparked a comeback in the closing minutes made it a one point game, 50-49, heading into the fourth.
Indiana broke through early in the fourth to take the lead and after facing some resistance midway through the frame, they reeled off a nine point unanswered spurt to clinch the win. Indiana shrugged off their cold shooting in
the fourth and capped the game with a 9-of-11 shooting from the floor.
