Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings injured in game-2 against Atlanta Dream – WNBA Update
In the game-2 of the Eastern Conference finals, Indiana Fever not only lost, allowing the defending Eastern Conference champions to extend the series to three games, they also received a major shock in the shape of an injury to
the reigning MVP Tamika Catchings.
The 32-year-old forward was guarding Atlanta’s centre Alison Bales on the perimeter late in the fourth quarter when she accidently landed on Bales' foot in an attempt to block the shot. She went down immediately and grabbed her
right foot.
The 6 ft 1 in forward tried to get up, but went back down again and was then taken to the locker room by her teammates Shavonte Zellous and Tammy Sutton Brown. Catchings did not return for rest of the period.
Fever’s guard Katie Douglas later shed light on the significance if Catchings’ injury,
"I saw her face and saw her trying to get up and not being able to," "As a player, it's really emotional when those kind of things happen. Tamika wants to win a championship so bad, so I know her going down -- I am sure all kinds
of thoughts were running through her head. I told her, 'Think positive, don't think the worst.' I'm still positive until I hear confirmation that she could possibly play on Tuesday."
However, to make things complicated for Fever, it has been revealed that the injury is possibly a relapse of the Achilles' tendon injury, which she endured in the 2007 Eastern Conference finals against Detroit Shock. At that, the
Duncanville High School’s product was able to recover well and returned for most part of the 2008 WNBA season and the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing.
The Fever will be hoping that history repeats itself and quite quickly at that.
The seven time All-Star did not have a good scoring night till before she got injured. She totalled eight points, on a 2 of 10 shooting, nine rebounds and two steals prior to been taken after 33 minutes.
Catching has been sensational throughout the season and she has been one of the main reasons, Fever have made it so far into the playoffs. However, with just one game standing between her team and a shot at WNBA glory, the injury
woes have struck again.
