Indiana Pacers T.J. Ford ready to compromise on playing minutes for a NBA C’Ship contender
There is no shortage of players who wants to represent a championship contender and for that they are ready to compromise on their salaries, role and even playing minutes too. One such candidate is Indiana Pacers free agent T.J. Ford, who recently wished to play for a winner.
Although, Indiana was among the top eight teams of the Eastern Conference, which made it to the 2011 playoffs, with a 37-45 record. However, the Pacers failed to go deep in the postseason as they were routed by the top team of the east in regular season, Chicago Bulls 4-1.
Out of these five games against the Bulls in the postseason, Ford was included in just two games and spent a total of seven minutes on the floor, which is half to the playing time he got in the 2010-11 regular season. This also affected his scoring average and he tallied just 3.5 points and 1.0 assist per game.
Things weren’t much different in the regular-season. Ford’s playing minutes were reduced from 25.3 in 2009-10 to 18.9 minutes per game during 2010-11 season. Consequently his numbers took a major hit 10.3 points in 2009-10 to 5.4 points in the 2010-11season.
Completely out of favour in Pacers, Ford opted for the free agency and has now come out with the type of team he wants to be with.
“First, it’s about winning. I want to be on a team where it’s about winning and they’re heading in the right direction. Definitely, it’s a team that’s going to be in the playoffs and go further than just the first round. I just want to be part of a team. Whether that means playing 10, 15, 20, 30 or 35 minutes, I just want to be one of the factors that helps the team win.”
However, given his track record at the Pacers, there will be very few elite teams, who will want to take a chance on Ford. If he indeed gets selected, his role will mainly be as a fringe player. A move from Indiana will however certainly change his scenery and with some luck, he might establish himself as a sought after player in NBA.
