Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell rules out change at quarterback position – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell has ruled out any change at the quarterback position despite a dismal performance by them for last few games.
The coach said that their regular starter Curtis Painter will continue to be available for the position. He played down the criticism from fans and other quarters for bringing a Painter's replacement.
He told reporters that Painter will make his eighth consecutive start of this season in the game against Carolina this Sunday.
"Curtis has not played a whole lot of football around here for us, and I think he needs to be given a good, clean opportunity," Caldwell said. "A lot of things happened out there that I don't think were his fault. I just don't
feel like he's gotten a clear opportunity to do that yet, so I want to give him that opportunity."
The Colts have been struggling at the quarterback position since injury of their main starter Peyton Manning. Peyton had neck Surgery on September 8. He has not played any game or practice since. This was his third surgery in past
19 months. He is unexpected for the current regular season of National Football League (NFL), the American football premier league.
Peyton Manning was replaced by Kerry Collins. He was signed by the Colts in a $4 million deal, but suffered a concussion into his third week with them. He was placed on Colts injured reserves list, and is likely to spend current
season on the sideline.
Caldwell had then brought Curtis Painter to replace Collins as a starter. He, however, lost all his seven starts in last three games in which he appeared for the Colts.
In view of the dismal performance by Painter, fans have criticised the coach and expected that he might make change during Colts' bye week.
The coach, however, has refuted the criticism and ruled out any change at the position. He said that the Colts were better off to continue with Painter to start at the position, adding that he necessarily had not been given enough
opportunities to show his best.
"I think there were a couple of games that we did, and maybe he hit a little bit of a tailspin, but you can't always see everything until you slow it all down on tape and I think you'll see him continue to improve," he said.
Meanwhile, Painter said that they were improving with every game and expected a better performance in their next game.
