Indianapolis Colts extend head coach hunt to include Baltimore Ravens assistant staff – NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts have continued their search for a head coach in spite of their owner, Jim Irsay’s, statement a day earlier that they will be able to finalize their head coaching candidate by mid to late next week.
Since firing of their former coach, Jim Caldwell, the team has interviewed coaching officials at various teams without making a final decision on any of them, so far.
As of the latest, the team management has sought a permission from the Baltimore Ravens to interview their defensive co-ordinator, Chuck Pagano,
It is for the first time that the team has shifted their focus to include defensive assistant coach staff as their potential prospects for their heading coaching position.
Almost all of the officials who have been interviewed by the Colts over past few days are from offensive department. This led to an impression that the team’s focus was an offensive coach with their chances of a new draft prize on card.
The Ravens official is expected to be interviewed by Tuesday, January 24, 2012. A decision then is expected from the Colts owner if he manages to qualify for the position.
Pagano has spent a year at the Baltimore and is being credited to building their defence as one of the best on the league. The Ravens is at number three on the National Football League (NFL) to have allowed fewest yards and points.
His team have one of the successful years in the 2011 NFL regular season despite that their end was not as impressive as their overall run. They ended up the season by losing their American Football Conference (AFC) championship game to the New England Patriots.
Pagano is the latest reported official to be interviewed for the Colts. A couple of days the team is reported to have interviewed ormer Ohio State Buckeyes coach, Jim Tressel, for second time.
The team has interviewed more than half a dozen people since firing of their former coach a couple of weeks ago. Jim Caldwell sacking had followed the termination of services of Colts vice chairman, Bill Polian and his son, the general manager at the team.
Caldwell was let go after having spent over a decade at the Indianapolis. He has been successful in training and grooming players like, Peyton Manning, the Colts’ quarterback. Manning did not play the 2011 NFL regular season despite being left on the active
roster throughout the season.
His absence apparently cost his team the entire 2011 season and at the end proved fatal for the jobs of almost entire management of the team. From vice chairman to head coach and assistant coaches; all of them have been fired by the Colts owner, Irsay.
A hunt for finding a replacement for Colts is one since.
