Indianapolis Colts faces exit of veteran Jeff Saturday as player weighs retirement option – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts' veteran centre, Jeff Saturday, is nearing the end of his contract with the team at the end of this National Football League (NFL) regular season, and the player said on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, that he might not be seeking an extension
of his association with the game, American professional football, and call it a day at the end of this season.
His remarks and the possibility of weighing his options such as the retirement from the sport came a day after Colts' new general manager, Ryan Grigson, and owner, Jim Irsay, let go of coach, Jim Caldwell, after his stay at the side for more than a decade.
Saturday is among the players who said they were saddened over hearing of the Caldwell sacking, calling him a friend and great coach. Caldwell was fired by the team management on Wednesday, January 18, 2012.
The player, who had been at the starting position for team during all those years under the reign of the coach, said his decision about the possibility of his retirement will be based his families’ priorities.
"I have my own decision to make long before I worry (about) what the Colts are going to do," Saturday said.
"I'm considering not playing. My decision is going to be based on my wife and my family. I have to go through that process myself first and decide what I want to do for us and make the right decision. What's going on with the organization really doesn't
have any effect at this point."
The veteran centre joined Indianapolis Colts in 1999 and became a regular starter in 2000.
He has spent as many as 13 years with the side till now.
His current deal with the team runs out at the end of the season this year and with his consideration of calling it quits on the field, he is unlikely to seek an extension.
The player has also been at the starting position along with Colts' quarterback, Peyton Manning, and Saturday not confirming his return next season, is seen possibly as another reason behind his consideration of options such as retirement.
Manning himself has played at the Colts for as many as 14 years. He was out of the entire 2011 season due to his neck surgery.
There is no confirmation if will be able to play football another season.
Both veterans have played a role in the wins of the Indianapolis Colts over the past decade and with chances of both going out at the same time is feared to aggravate problems for the team, which has just come out of the regular season with its worst ever
record of only two wins against massive 14 losses.
The possibility of their stay or exit will be confirmed in the coming days.
