Indianapolis Colts hire OT Bradley Sowell to beef up security for QB Andrew Luck – NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts seek to increase protection around quarterback Andrew Luck, who had rather tough time in the season opener against the Chicago Bears on past Sunday – he was sacked a number of times in the game while hardly given any room to take it
easy on the field during his rookie appearance.
Under the strategy, the Colts announced to have hired offensive tackle Bradley Sowell from practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Terms of his deal have not been disclosed by any of the stakeholders. This includes value and tenure.
Another problem the team witnessed in the season opener was that the offence allowed too many sacks to their opponents and the new signing should also serve to the team’s need on this end.
Sowell had joined the Bucs as an undrafted free agent earlier this year and his experience is limited to playing only in the college league. He nevertheless is rated to be a potential player and can certainly perform up to maximum level.
His signing is apparently the first answer of the Colts to the extensively debated question how the team can protect the QB more in the future. Andrew was the only target of Bears’ defence in the game and the way he was singled out and marked, a possibility
of a serious injury was very much there.
Luck has the quality and capability of not being afraid, and managed well against intense blocking. He still remains prone to injuries and Colts' decision to beef up security around him is considered a well-thought move.
This should also improve movement of the quarterback who seemed to be suffocated in the last game with a few scoring opportunities. Since there is a higher level of hype and expectations from the rookie, all teams intend to specifically mark up Luck in the
future games, a rather tough challenge for the rookie.
Although the quarterback himself has not complained about failure of the team’s offence in providing him a timely protection, his struggle to clear his way ahead remained a challenge for him in the game, and the team has shown seriousness to tackle it to
an extent they can.
