Indianapolis Colts inch forward on signing rookies, QB Andrew Luck still waiting -NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts are yet to make progress in the negotiations on deal for rookie quarterback, Andrew Luck, as the management looks to agree to terms with other draft players first.
Colts, on Tuesday, May 22, signed rookie defensive tackle, Josh Chapman, who was picked in the fifth round of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, held from April 26 to 28.
Neither of the concerned stakeholders have disclosed terms of the rookie’s contract, including its value and tenure. Chapman is the sixth rookie to have been signed by Colts so far.
A total of 10 players were inducted into the side by Colts off this year’s draft, and all those who were selected on the final day have been signed by the team to respective deals.
None of the players who were inducted during the first and second day have received contracts yet. This includes the top pick of the year, QB Andrew Luck.
The team, which has the comfort of Luck’s absence, is aiming to utilise the time to work out deals for other players.
Luck is away from Indianapolis, attending his Stanford College to finish remaining courses on his architectural programme, a mandatory requirement for the player to fulfil before he joins Colts for any formal activity. He is expected back next month.
In spite of owner, Jim Irsay’s aim of signing all the players’ deals swiftly, no apparent progress has been reported on Luck’s contract.
His agent has remained tight-lipped over the matter and any update on it remains down to Irsay’s references here and there. Lately, Irsay himself has maintained a mum, much to the surprise of football community.
Some independent reports have claimed that the rookie should expect a four-year contract worth somewhere around $22 million.
The payout and tenure is estimated on the basis of an average deal terms standards prevalent in the market for a rookie player of Luck’s calibre.
Again, neither the owner nor player’s agent has confirmed or denied those reports.
