Indianapolis Colts’ last pick QB Chandler Harnish this year’s Mr Irrelevant – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback, Chandler Harnish, heads to Newport Beach, California, to honour himself as ‘Mr Irrelevant’ for being selected as the last pick of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft.
Mr Irrelevant Week is celebrated every year since 1976 to honour the last pick of the NFL draft. Chandler, who is selected at 253rd overall position, is this year’s Mr. Irrelevant.
He will be in California this Monday to open the week-long ceremonies in his honour. He is going to be a guest of honour at a beach party, will mingle with players and celebrities, supporters and fans. Further, he has been invited to Disneyland
and will take part in Parade. The proceeds from all these festivities will be contributed to charities serving different causes.
Apparently, the Mr Irrelevant sounds to be a player who is considered least worthy, or at least not given as much importance as the top draft pick of the season, but Harnish is going to have special attention and importance for the entire
next week.
He says of the opportunity:
“The name ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ kind of puts a negative spin on it at times but for me, it’s going to be a great experience. … There are not many opportunities in your lifetime you get to experience something like this.”
The player says the pressure of the pro environment is always there no matter what position one plays at. He noted since Colts are through a rebuilding phase, all players feel to have added responsibilities to perform better.
He added:
“Yeah, I’ve felt pressure a couple days (with the Colts) because I didn’t think I was mentally focused. But once I really got to understand the playbook and got in the film room and started to learn from the other quarterbacks, that pressure
left and it becomes an exciting feeling.”
Harnish will play as a backup to Andrew Luck, the starting QB, who is this year’s top draft pick, if he makes it to the 53-player roster at end of the training camp.
Colts are hitting their full training camp at later part of next month and it will run through to the mid of August. All teams are allowed to have 90 players maximum until then but the roster strength should not be more than 53 players
before going into the regular season, as per the league rules.
