Indianapolis Colts lose safety Melvin Bullitt for the season
As if having to deal with the absence of the injured two-time pro bowler Bob Sanders wasn't enough, the Indianapolis Colts have now lost the man they have been relying on to replace him. Melvin Bullitt will be out for the remainder of the season.
"Worst possible news," Leonard Roth, Bullitt's agent, said in an e-mail to the
Indianapolis Star. "He will be operated on in the next two weeks to repair (his shoulder) and get ready to go next year."
Although the Colts themselves have not revealed the exact nature of Bullitt's injury, the Indianapolis Star
has reported that the 4th-year saftey is suffering from a broken bone in his shoulder.
The loss of Bullitt comes as just another blow to the Indianapolis defence, which is already struggling with injuries and fighting to keep opposing offences from moving the ball against them. They currently rank among the bottom ten teams in the NFL on defence.
Bullitt was seen as an ideal replacement for Bob Sanders in the Colts secondary. Sanders went down in the season opener, but he had done well, with 13 tackles and one interception in four games.
When Bullitt left last week's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, DaJuan Morgan stepped up and filled in. It is unclear what the Colts next move will be as they prepare to take on the last of the NFL's undefeated teams, the Kansas City Chiefs, next Sunday,
October 10.
The 2-2 Colts appear to have their backs up against the wall, and it will not be easy for them to get back to the Super Bowl like they did last season.
"The way to develop consistency, and I'm going to paraphrase the great John Wooden here, but the best way to help the team is to improve yourself," Bill Polian said. "So everybody on the team has to do the best they can do. If everybody concentrates the
best they can do, if everybody goes out and does the best they can every week, things will work out."
