Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay inks CB Vontae Davis deal with Miami Dolphins – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay has confirmed signing of a deal with the Miami Dolphins for trade of cornerback Vontae Davis in exchange for two draft picks in 2013.
The deal has ended about a week of speculations about the potential addition of a ‘high-profile’ player to Colts’ squad that have been in circulation in the wake repeated tweets by the owner. Jim had continuously denied disclosing name of the potential hiring
on fears the deal might fall through.
Now both stakeholders have confirmed reaching the agreement. The Dolphins in exchange for trade of Vontae will get a second-round pick of the Colts in 2013 and a conditional late round-pick. Both sides refrained from giving details about the second draft
selection that too will be from next year’s draft.
Vontae’s arrival in Indianapolis nevertheless has strengthened Colts defence, which was considered to be the most likely area being a subject of new players' addition given the poor quality of talent it has at present.
Although almost all media outlets had predicted that the so-called high-profile hiring that Jim had been boasting about over the course of past week was meant for defensive line, the team had officially refused to accept it be a credible guess.
Colts’ first year coach Chuck Pagano, who had made the case for strengthening defensive line to make his transformed defence strategy to 4-3 workable, said to be pleased over the outcome.
Chuck said:
"I think if Vontae were coming out in the 2013 draft, there's no way he'd be there. A guy of this calibre and with this talent level and skill set, he wouldn't be there in the second (round). You don't find guys like this in the second."
Independently, a majority of commentators believe that Colts’ move is timely given they have lost a couple of players to injury problems recently. Defensive tackle Brandon McKinney is the latest one to go out with a knee problem. Chuck has confirmed that
the player is definitely heading to be on the injured reserve (IR) list.
Also, the Colts are not considered a team that weighs too much importance for the defence and quality of players at the position has always been below average.
