Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay says none of several names interviewed finalized for GM slot –NFL
The Indianapolis Colts said on Saturday, January 07, 2012, that they have not finalized any of the several candidates they interviewed for their vacant general manager (GM) slot as of yet.
Without confirming names of those who were interviewed, Colts owner, Jim Irsay, wrote on his twitter account that he, by the end of the first week of January 2012, had interviewed as many as seven people as potential candidates to take the GM position.
Only one name has appeared on his twitter note, which was of Montreal Alouettes GM Popp, but without any further details, which does not make the situation clear on any point whether he was finalised or not.
The Colts’ GM post has become open as a result of sacking their now former GM, Chris Polian, who along with his father, Colts’ vice chairman, Bill Polian, was relieved from his duties by Colts' owner, Jim Irsay, at the end of the 2011 National Football League
(NFL) regular season.
Irsay has interviewed, as he disclosed in his tweets, about seven candidates and sent requests to probably as many teams, seeking permission to interview their officials with prospects for the GM role with the Colts.
However, none of the names is final yet, as the team owner continues his search for a new general manager for his side.
There is no word from Irsay if his side will also be looking for a candidate to work as a vice chairman for them, in place of Bill Polian, who was sacked last week.
Polians – father and the son - became victims of Irsay’s first act following Colts’ poor performance in the regular season of the NFL, with only two wins in 16 games they played throughout the year.
It was their failure to find and prepare a replacement for their injured quarterback, Peyton Manning, which cost them the season and probably their jobs, as admitted by Bill Polian in his post-sacking comments.
Peyton Manning had a neck surgery in September of 2011 and did not play a single game for the Colts in the season.
It was the first time he missed a full season with the Colts and it was the very first season in 14 years career of Manning’s stay with the Colts that the team could not pull off a win without him being at the starting position.
This exposed the outfit at the quarterback position and their total dependence on one man and despite Bill Polians’ assurances, his departure was seen inevitable soon after the end of the regular season.
One of the Bill’s decisions that apparently exposed his poor decision-making was to continue keeping Peyton Manning on the active roster throughout the season with hopes that he might be back into the squad at some point of time in the season despite that
he did not have a timeline on his recovery and return.
With Polian gone, Irsay is quick in his hunt for a new manager for his side, which is expected to follow more reshuffling and changes at different positions in the management and line-up.
