Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee arrested for public intoxication
Indianapolis Colts punter, Pat McAfee, was arrested for public intoxication by Indianapolis police at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, 20 October.
McAfee was arrested in a popular nightlife neighbourhood known as Broad Ripple, after allegedly going for a swim in a canal just before dawn.
When asked by police officers if he had been swimming in the canal McAfee responded by saying, "I'm not sure".
McAfee claimed that it had been raining, when asked how he had gotten wet. He then claimed that he had left his shirt in the water.
According to the report, when asked how much he had had to drink, McAfee responded by saying, "A lot, 'cause I'm drunk."
When police officers found McAfee, he smelled of alcohol, was slurring his speech, and had trouble standing. He reportedly had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 – nearly twice the legal limit had he been driving.
Police were tipped on to McAfee after a driver had stopped at a red light and saw a man with no shirt approaching her car. Fearing McAfee was trying to enter the vehicle, the driver called 911.
The Indianapolis Colts' president, Bill Polian, released a statement indicating that the team was aware of the situation.
"We are in the process of gathering the relevant facts. When that task is complete, we will deal immediately with the issue of club discipline. Until we complete that process, we will have no further comment."
This is not the first time the Colts have found themselves in this situation, as McAfee is the third Colts player to be arrested on alcohol-related charges this year. Taj Smith, who has subsequently been cut by the team, is on that list, while John Hill,
who will be inactive all season, is the other.
There is no word yet on what the NFL and the Colts plan to do about the situation.
