Indianapolis Colts receiver Austin Collie ruled out with concussion
On Wednesday, 10 November, the Indianapolis Colts (5-3) ruled Austin Collie out for this weekend’s match-up with the Cincinnati Bengals (2-6), to little surprise. The wide receiver is continuing his recovery from a concussion, which he sustained during last
weekend’s match-up with the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to a report made by The Associated Press, Jim Caldwell informed the media that the second-year receiver’s symptoms are subsiding.
“He’s making progress, I think overall, and right now I think he’s day-by-day,” the Colts head coach said Wednesday. “It’s really in the hands of the physicians. They’re going to make a determination on that when they feel he’s clear and ready to go. But
I think he’s coming along.”
The receiver’s injury occurred during last Sunday’s 26-24 loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. During the game’s second quarter, Collie was hit by Philly defensive backs Kurt Coleman and Quintin Mikell, causing him to drop a pass attempt. The receiver,
who is playing in his second season out of Brigham Young, then remained motionless on the ground for several minutes before he was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Although replays show that Coleman provided the majority of the head-to-head contact, it was Mikell who was (more than likely unjustly) penalized for making unnecessary contact with a defenceless receiver. As of now, the collision has not been assessed a fine
by the NFL, who has been cracking down on unnecessary helmet-to-helmet contact as of 17 October, and has since been doling out hefty fines to perpetrators around the league.
Even though he was seen conversing with teammates both during Sunday’s halftime intermission, as well as after the game, Collie has yet to speak to the media since sustaining the injury. However, the Colts' medical staff has cleared the receiver to return to
his team-mates in Indianapolis.
