Indianapolis Colts see Andrew Luck promising offence leader as QB eases into training – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts’ emerging star rookie quarterback Andrew Luck had an impressive start to his pro career stint at the team’s training camp on Sunday as during his more than two-hour first practice session he showed himself to be a mature offence leader
with prompt and effective decision-making skills.
He from his very first throw proved he has not been left behind others in the offence learning and training despite the fact that the training camp is his first-ever proper activity since signing with the Colts.
The rookie did not take part in the team’s entire offseason programme, while being at the college to finish his degree – a mandatory requirement of the professional league regulator National Football League (NFL) for the prospective pro players.
Luck completed 27 passes out of total 32 attempts during his Sunday practice, immediately drawing praise from everywhere.
The Colts’ first year head coach Chuck Pagano said:
"That's a credit to the offensive guys, the offensive coaches. You can see from today the offense obviously stayed in their playbook, the retention has been excellent and they came out here and moved the ball up and down the field pretty much at will today."
Jim Irsay – the owner of the team, who had preferred to sign the rookie over the team’s former star Peyton Manning – boasted the player’s ability as a leader and said:
"My impression with him is that he is just very strong and steady and is working toward limiting the turnovers, the interceptions, working toward really being patient and not feeling he has to do it all on his own. He is not expected to win it all on his
own."
The owner must be pleased about the team’s prospects now, which seem to be brightened with the presence of the rookie on the starting line.
Still some commentators have cautioned Irsay and others not to expect too much out of the first year of the player. They have duly drawn the team’s attention towards the poor quality of the talent the team has at some other positions, which could affect
the rookie’s run.
Although Luck is seen having made a solid start, placing the entire burden of the team’s future on his shoulder will not be fair to him and it can hurt his pro career’s growth potential.
