Indianapolis Colts step up draft QB evaluation process, meeting Andrew Luck-NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts have stepped up their efforts for evaluation of the top pick of this draft season, who until very recently has been rated to be Stanford College’s quarterback, Andrew Luck.
Jim Irsay, the owner of Colts, who is leading the race for signing of the potential quarterback this draft season, has confirmed that some of the officials from the front office are visiting Northern California this week to evaluate the prospect.
Irsay confirmed the departure of the officials in a Twitter posting on Monday, April 02, 2012, but did not name Luck directly. He said the purpose of the officials’ visit was to "2c u know who!"
Earlier, some reports claimed that the management was planning to invite Luck to Indianapolis for an exclusive workout.
Whether those officials have gone to explore an opportunity to schedule a visit of the draft for workout at the team’s headquarters is not clear yet.
Colts’ general manager, Ryan Grigson, who could not witness the player’s performance at his pro day due to an unknown illness is said to be interested in viewing him throwing football.
Grigson, who is in his first year at Colts, will be contributing towards the final decision of the owner about signing of the draft quarterback.
The owner has not disclosed more details of the visit and whether the planned exclusive hosting of the player was still on their mind. So, the visit and surrounding developments remain merely in media discussion.
Another problem that Colts might face is the choice between Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Until recently, Luck was rated to be no. 1 draft pick, but some analysts have started weighing Baylor College’s QB, Griffin III to be competing for the top slot.
Irsay, in one of his earlier remarks, had admitted of the difficulty in making a decision to pick any of the two draft prizes. With the confirmation of the prospective meeting with Luck around the corner, Colts seem to have started the process around the
players’ evaluation formally.
The owner is said to be very cautious in making the final choice about either of the players. He is reported to be aiming for a Peyton Manning of the future and his decision at the moment is going to bear witness to the credibility of his call in the future.
It is expected that the management will be clearer in their choice in the next couple of weeks. There is no information around the possibility of an invitation to Griffin for an exclusive workout.
Since the departure of their former QB, Peyton Manning, earlier last month, Colts have overhauled the team completely. Now, hiring of a new QB remains to be most important challenge in the way of rebuilding and reformation.
