Indianapolis Speedway Tire Wear?

What causes the right tires to wear at INDY when turning left? Is it weight distribution or "skimming", or what? Why at Indy more than other tracks?

  1. Indy is a rougher track with less banking.  Without the banking to help the cars turn there is more sliding coming out of them.  Just the physics of the COT make for more pressure on the right rear than the "downforce" cars had.  The extra surface area, combined with the rear wing and poorer handling of these new cars all contribute to the extra wear on the right side tires, especially the rear one.  They also sit up higher in the air and that makes it won't to roll over on the right side in the corners.

  2. According to Rusty Wallace last night he say's this COT "rolls" over way more than what they used to race due to inertia on turns, thus putting much more weight on the right side tires. Thus, when they accelerate out of a turn, that right rear tire is being abused. Even though they have posi traction, the right rear tire is doing the digging hard for traction.

Indy did whats called a diamond grind on the track before the Indy 500 for IRL, to create more down force for those cars. The COT's couldn't handle the track.

Like Rusty also said, NASCAR and Goodyear never returned to Indy after the 500 to do a re-test. They both relied on the previous years findings, which was NOT with the COT car. Someone obviously blew it.

  3. It has to do with the car of tomorrow and the crappy track in Indy., the surface is very rough.....that whole race stank............boringggggggggggggggg.

  4. lack of down force causes more weight transfer to the right side, this is the problem with the cot at many tracks. also the track surface at indy is very abrasive.

  5. Bottom Line Goodyear Sucks!

  6. more weight on the right side

can we please just leave the Indy questions alone and move on to Pocono where some of you whiny brats will stop complaining and shut up because you actually see what you call a "race". As if Indianapolis wasn't one.

  7. I don't recall the Indy cars having this problem. They create more down force and lateral g's than NASCAR. Let me think, what brand of race tire do they use?

  8. I really don't  know.but it was a really boring race.
