Indians content with Shelley Duncan’s presence, player hopes to prove himself
The Cleveland Indians finished second in the American League Central, this year. However things could have been a lot different if Shelley Duncan did not come in for the team in the late season games. His role has been pivotal to the Tribe’s success in the
past. Now he wants to play as a regular star in the lineup. The Indians however consider him an excellent substitute in the left field, first base and designated hitter position. He and the Indians general manager talked to the press on Friday, November 4.
Duncan has a weak record when it comes to durability. He has not gone on to play more than 85 games in one season and that is a concern for any team when it considers placing one of its fringe players on the front lines. The Tribes’ GM, Chris Antonetti,
made the case very simple.
"We're fortunate to have him as an alternative for us going into next year. It's a foundation from which we're looking to build. He's a guy that could potentially contribute. Now we can examine what alternatives are out there for us this offseason that can
improve upon our team."
The GM went on to affirm that the club would only then consider how the development would affect the player’s chances and time on the field
Duncan played 76 games this year, hitting a .260 average. He smashed 11 home runs. Scored 29 runs and drove in 47 runs. The player can hit and Jim Thome believes him to be a bigger star. The player however is not concerned. He knows he will have a chance
in the near future. He is more than happy to prove his worth.
"It always seems like every single season an opportunity will arise where you get a chance to play every day," Duncan said. "You never know when that will happen. It could happen in April. It could happen in September. You better be ready for it."
With the Indians looking for experience in the offseason market, Duncan could get limited time on the field but if Thome believes he is a monster, then there is nothing set in stone. Duncan could become a regular player. The only thing required of him is
proving his worth.
