There was a love affair between Nehru and Lady Mountbatten. The Mountbattens had an "open marriage" and she had many affairs with both men and women, While Nehru was negotiating Indian independence with the Viceroy, he also had "a special relationship" with Lord Mountbatten’s wife, Edwina. The relationship between her and Nehru was more than sexual, and may not have been sexual at all. mind Nehru's relationship with Lord and Lady Mountbatten.

In a letter to his daughter, Patricia, Mountbatten wrote,

“She and Jawaharlal are so sweet together, they really dote on each other in the nicest way and Pammy and I are doing everything we can to be tactful and help. Mummy has been incredibly sweet lately and we’ve been such a happy family.”

Edwina Mountbatten was concerned with the suffering of the millions of people who fell victim to Independence era violence and displacement. Her husband thought that the problems of mass murder and ethnic cleansing were beyond the scope of his responsibility.

Years later daughter Pamala Mountbatten Hicks , talked to the BBC anouther mother's relationship with Nehru:

"It was a very very deep love that lasted for 12 years," she said before refuting the rumour that they might have been lovers.

"It was a really emotional love . An affair one thinks of as physical. This was not...It was an amazing amazing friendship."

Nehru wrote letters to Lady Mountbatten's almost every day for the rest of her life. Lady Pamala Mountbatten Hicks , who read Nehru's letters to her mother described them as "very tender".

In one letter by Nehru to Edwina Mountbatten written in March 1957 Nehru wrote: “Suddenly I realised (and perhaps you also did) that there was a deeper attachment between us, that some uncontrollable force, of which I was dimly aware, drew us to one another, I was overwhelmed and at the same time exhilarated by this new discovery. We talked more intimately as if some veil had been removed and we could look into each other’s eyes without fear or embarrassment.”

After Lady Mountbatten's death in 1960, she was buried at sea. Prime Minister Nehru sent a frigate from the Indian Navy to attend her funeral and cast a wreath into the ocean on his behalf.

And…that Vijayalaxmi Pandit wanted to marry Syud Hossain, a Muslim journalist working for The Independent but Mahatma Gandhi was against it and didn’t allow it?

  2. Not sure. Have you got any sources or evidence for this please?

Edit: Hhmmm I just looked it up and it says they had a 'close, intimate friendship'. It was 'alleged' they had an affair but don't know if there was any truth to this. And you say it is important to Indians, well I'm Indian and I couldn't care less if they had an affair or not.
