Indian’s likely to hire local hockey coach
The woeful state in the Indian hockey team, which seemed to be aggravating with every passing day, is finally coming to an end, as Hockey India (HI) and Sport Authority of India (SAI) is considering to hire a local coach for the squad.
The men’s hockey team of India is suffering without a coach following the Asian Games, where national coach Harendra Singh resigned from his post after India lost to Malaysia in the semi-final. On the other hand, the contract of chief coach, Jose Brasa also
expired after the tournament.
An official of Hockey India, the national body of hockey, said that the federation is mulling to hire the services of a local coach; however the final decision in this regard would be taken in December or January 2011.
The official further stated that the contract of Spaniard Jose Brasa would not be renewed for another term, as the association is not happy with the performance of former three foreign coaches. In case, if Hockey India choose a foreign trainer then he would
surely be a Master Tactician of his field, official added.
Narendra Batra the Secretary of Hockey India (HI) speaking to the media said that there is a slim possibility of a foreign coach; however Sports Authority of India will chose the final man. He said, “We have not ruled that out. But the decision is with SIA
as they have the final say on appointing a coach whether foreign or local.”
A few former players of Indian hockey team including Gerhard Rach, Jude Felix, Harendra Singh and Ranjan Negi have submitted proposals before the Sports Authority of India and showed interest for becoming the coach of the Indian hockey team.
Narendra was of the view that the authorities concerned are looking and exploring various options for hiring a new coach, as the absence of a competent coach would leave grave impacts on the sport in the country.
Replying to a query about future of former national coach, Harendra Singh, Batra said that the sports authorities are not happy with the way Harendra tendered his resignation before completion of the tour.
India, which reined the game of hockey in the past, is suffering severe coaching crises since long time. Whether a foreign coach or a local trainer appoints as trainer of the team, but he will have to give a new start to the Indian hockey team, which could
not achieve a major title since long ago. The performance level of the India team will definitely be high if the post fills with taking all the stake holders onboard.
