India’s Saina Nehwal snatches number three spot of women’s singles in BWF rankings
India’s Saina Nehwal retained her position at number three in the world rankings of the women’s singles conducted by the Badminton World Federation. China’s Wang Shixian at number one and her team-mate Wang Yihan occupies the second spot in the world.
In the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, Saina was at number five before the competition. She delivered a superb performance and grabbed the women’s singles title in Basel. Her win in Swiss Open improved her world ranking and now the Indian is placed at number
three in the women’s singles category.
The 21-year-old Indian suffered from a ligament injury in her right leg a couple of months before and remained away from international Badminton for almost two months, missing two major events. Her first tournament in 2011 was Korea Open Premier Super Series
where she failed to deliver impressive performance and could not pass the second round.
In the All England Premier Super Series 2011, the Indian lost her match at the quarter-final stage. However, Saina regained her form and clinched her first title in 2011 by winning Swiss Open GP Gold in Switzerland that also pushed her on the number three
position in the women’s singles ranking.
Saina delivered a tremendous performance throughout the previous year and grabbed three Super Series titles. She won Singapore Open 2010, Indonesia Open 2010 and Hong Kong Open 2010 Super Series events. Saina achieved the world number two spot, but lost
it as she missed major international events due to injury.
The Junior World Champion is determined to continue her tremendous form just like the previous year. Saina has beaten the top Chinese shuttlers in major tournaments on several occasions. She has become the first Indian female player who has won three super
series titles in the ladies singles category.
Saina is once again busy in training to prepare for the upcoming tournaments. She will be facing Chinese opponents in almost every Super Series event as the BWF has made it compulsory that all top ten players will play at least five of seven Super Series
tournaments in one year. The decision is taken to maintain the highest level of the game in these international events.
