India’s hegemony in world cricket is destroying the game, believes Arjuna Ranatunga – Cricket News Update
Former World Cup winning captain of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arjuna-Ranatunga-c45447, is of the opinion that franchise cricket is a curse for the game and said that the hegemony of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is hampering the sport at the highest level.
Ranatunga is not the only former cricketer who has slammed BCCI, in fact a number of former cricketers believe that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is doing no good for international cricket. The list includes some legends like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Michael-Chappell-c63914.
It is because of IPL that the high-profile cricketers have started to concentrate on franchise cricket instead of international cricket. IPL is a huge distraction for the players as some of them opt to play for their respective franchise over playing for
their countries.
Since the last one year, India has gone through a massive slump in Test cricket and Ranatunga has no doubts in his mind that IPL is the major reason behind this decline. He expressed that the batsmen have started to concentrate on big shots and their temperaments
have suffered.
The former Sri Lankan captain said that India has produced a number of world-class batsmen in the past but now they have started to produce big-hitters only and as a result, the Men in Blue are bound to struggle in Test cricket, which should always remain
the pinnacle for any cricketer.
"They won the World Cup, but look at the way they are playing Test cricket. They are losing to most of the countries and don't produce any more Gavaskars, Vengsarkars or Viswanaths, Tendulkars, Dravids and Laxmans. I am talking about classical cricketers,"
Ranatunga expressed.
The former left-handed middle-order batsman is not happy with the influence of BCCI on other cricket boards and said that the Indian board is able to manipulate the sport because of its control on money.
He maintained, "They will now produce butchers because of the IPL. Most countries are now being controlled by the Indian Cricket Board because they are the kingpin and have all the money. In the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 says something,
all the others keep their mouths shut because they are dependent on Indian money.”
