I'm not the typical American tourist who only visits Americanized countries.I have been to China, India, and Thailand, and have fell in love with their cultures. Australia maybe somewhat different because it is impacted by the US to a great extent, but where can I go to experience the indigenous Australian culture? Any places in specific?

  1. Many  places mostly in Northern territory and Northern Western Australia and north Queensland have Aboriginal Communities. http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/a...

  2. Cairns would be a good base plus you get to visit the Great Barrier Reef.

Quinkan Art Galleries, this in not on tourist trail and roads past Cooktown are unsealed. Significant rock art site. They have the Laura bi-annual dance festival that you could perhaps tie in with a visit. This festival welcomes visitors but it is not for visitors, so not a tourism endevour at all.

If you stay at Cooktown some guides from nearby Hope Vale community can arrange some trips for you. The best bet is to communicate with them as to best times and best experience. A visit to elim beach is recommended but permission and a small fee required to traditional custodians and 4wd required (sometimes hard to find a rental allowed in these parts). Some tours include a visit to this beach and the coloured sands.

There is a range of accommodation in Cooktown.

    Torres Strait islands.

Flights daily to Horn Island with ferry transfer to Thursday island, main administrative Island for the Strait. Poruma Island has a resort (aka Coconut Island) but visit to other islands should be arranged via invitation.

Nearby to Port Douglas is a walk that is detailed on website. Getting closer to mainstream tourism but more authentic I feel than the mass tourism attraction Tjapukai.

Other sites worth investigating are Mt Mulligan (Ngarrabullgan)  though to my knowledge there are no aboriginal inhabitants though they live nearby and a tour should be able to be organised. Mt Mulligan cattle Station can provide accommodation so they may also arrange this tour.
