Indonesia Open 2012: Tien Minh whacks Tommy Sugiarto in first round of Men’s Singles event
Men’s Singles campaigner Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam opened his marathon in Djarum Indonesia Open in perfect manner and stamped Tommy Sugiarto in first round on June 13, 2012.
This battle remained in full swing for 69 minutes and both players kept the audience intact with their mesmerising performance in three gruelling sets.
However, final scores of 21-13, 18-21 and 20-22 granted Tien Minh a permit to continue his race and meet Jan O Jorgensen in pre quarter-final round at Istora Senayan Stadium of Jakarta.
Though, the Vietnamese player lost very opening game of the match but he made a great comeback and secured the honour by grabbing last two games.
In first set of the contest, Tommy Sugiarto played dominating badminton and gained immediate advantage in match score position.
The Indonesian shuttler was bit sluggish in the start as he trailed behind until 5-8 but then he gathered speed and showed amazing progress.
He added five continuous points in his total which helped him to enjoy slight edge in 11-10 before the interval.
After one-minute break, he successfully maintained that rhythm and took his total to 15-11. He employed unbeatable tactics and wrapped the show with 21-13 by clinching last six points in a row.
Next game was filled with great anticipation as both contenders exhibited admirable craft in the court.
World Number eleven shuttler Tien Minh put his challenger under pressure by dominating first six rallies but his expedition remained at halt for short period of time as the opposing player counterbalanced the situation at 8-8.
Though, Tommy Sugiarto finished first half with 11-9 but he could not match his rival’s skills in later part of the game.
The Vietnamese campaigner put extra effort and successfully avoided a straight-set defeat by registering 21-18 score on the board.
Now both contenders were standing at same level and they put all in their possession to oust the other.
They did not allow each other to establish a comfortable lead and remained close until game point situation.
However, Tien Minh proved his mettle and finished this battle with favourable margin of 22-20.
